Maintenance

Pool Chemistry Simplified

The Goal: Clear, Comfortable, and Safe Water

Pool chemistry doesn't have to be intimidating. With a simple routine and a basic understanding of the key water balance factors, you can keep your pool looking crystal clear and feeling great all season long.

The Four Essentials of Pool Chemistry

  • Chlorine: Kills bacteria and keeps water sanitized. Ideal range is typically 1–3 ppm for residential pools.
  • pH: Measures how acidic or basic your water is. Aim for 7.4–7.6 to keep swimmers comfortable and chlorine effective.
  • Total Alkalinity: Helps stabilize pH and prevent big swings. Most pools do best between 80–120 ppm.
  • Stabilizer (CYA): Protects chlorine from being burned off by the Florida sun. Keep it in the recommended range to avoid cloudy water or chlorine lock.

A Simple Weekly Testing Routine

  • Test chlorine and pH 2–3 times per week during peak swim season.
  • Check alkalinity and stabilizer at least once a month or after heavy rain.
  • Record your readings so you can spot trends before issues appear.
  • Make small adjustments rather than large, drastic chemical doses.

Common Problems and Quick Fixes

Cloudy water, algae blooms, and strong chlorine smells are usually signs that one of the key chemistry levels is out of balance. A shock treatment, filter cleaning, and correcting pH and chlorine levels will solve most issues when caught early.

When to Call in the Pros

If you're fighting recurring algae, stains, or equipment corrosion, our team can help you diagnose the underlying cause and reset your water balance the right way. A professional visit once or twice a year can make ongoing maintenance much easier.
